Girls on the Run
Girls on the Run is a positive youth development after school program for 3rd-8th grade girls and part of an international organization with over 120,000 participants on an annual basis. We have a highly interactive 24 lesson curriculum that combines self-esteem enhancing lessons with uplifting workouts. At the end of the program, young girls are empowered with a sense of achievement when they complete a 5k race with hundreds of other Girls on the Run participants. Appalachian Psychological Services for Kids (APS4Kids)
APS4Kids provides assistance for families of children who are typically developing and children with developmental disabilities such as autism. We help families develop effective, positive solutions for difficulties such as tantrums, bedtime problems, toilet training, and school-related problems. For children with disabilities we also often assist with problems such as self-injury, food selectivity, and aggression. Our focus is on brief, evidence-based interventions. We work on a sliding scale and can provide services at no charge for families with limited fiscal means. Physical Activity Equipment Lending Library
The mission of the Lending Library is to assist people in Western NC to become more active by providing them with a variety of physical activity equipment to use and interchange in worksites, camps, schools, churches, and all other settings. There is something for everyone in the Lending Library, including babies, adaptive equipment (ideas), and items for seniors.

Charles E. and Geneva S. Scott Scottish Rite Communication Disorders Clinic
The primary purpose of the Clinic is the provision of "hands-on" clinical learning experiences for students pursuing their Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology. The secondary purpose is the provision of quality services to children, adolescents and adults with communication disorders in the region. The Clinic provides prevention, assessment, and treatment services in the areas of speech, language, swallowing, and hearing disorders. Psychology Clinic
The clinic offers clinical services to children and adolescents with AD/HD referral concerns, including comprehensive, state-of-the art diagnostic assessments and assessments for learning disabilities. Interventions for individuals and families with AD/HD or learning problems are available. Fees for evaluations range from $500 to $850. Insurance companies or Medicaid may provide reimbursement for services received at the psychology clinic. Crinkleroot Retreat 2015
Crinkleroot Retreat is a program sponsored by Appalachian’s Institute for Health and Human Services within the College of Health Sciences. It is intended to provide parents and caretakers with free respite care, and offer children on the autism spectrum the opportunity to participate in typical camp activities that have been modified for their specific needs. The camp is held in April in celebration of National Autism Awareness Month. Reading Clinic
Provides direct service to children with reading disabilities. Each child receives approximately 15 hours of one-to-one reading and writing instruction. The Clinic based on the Appalachian Campus operates an additional off campus branches in Davie County, Burke County, and Yadkin County. The ASU Reading Clinic remains the only university-based clinic in North Carolina that offers year-round teacher training, along with diagnostic and remedial reading services to children in the community. Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs encourages young people to have high expectations, stay in school, study hard, and take the right courses to go to college. The mission of the GEAR UP initiative is to accelerate the academic achievement of middle and secondary school students in the Alleghany, Ashe, Burke, Clay, Graham, Madison, Rutherford, Swain, Watauga, Wilkes, and Yancey Counties in North Carolina, so that increasing numbers will graduate from high school and enroll and succeed in college. Phone: 828-262-6332 Address: 213-D Edwin Duncan Hall Email: [email protected] Description of Services: As-U-R is a student support program focused on supporting students with executive function challenges (EFCs). Skills related to academic success such as organization, planning and setting priorities, getting starting and completing tasks, monitoring progress on tasks, and decision-making are referred to as executive function skills. Executive function challenges are defined as chronic difficulties in organizing, planning, and carrying out tasks and can make success in college-level academics much more difficult. Some college students with EFCs may have previously been assessed for or even diagnosed with ADHD or a learning disability, but others may not despite struggling with such tasks. Eligibility: Students must be admitted to ASU through the regular admissions process in order to participate in As-U-R. Applications for As-U-R are accepted on an ongoing basis from high school seniors, transfer students, and current ASU students. Upward Bound
Upward Bound provides academic support to high school students so they may complete high school, enroll in college, and successfully obtain a college degree. Funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO Programs division, qualifying participants come from families who meet federal income guidelines, or will be first-generation college students.
