Description of Services:
SAFE (Sheltered Aid to Families in Emergencies) is a non-profit agency serving women, men, teens and children whose lives have been affected by domestic and sexual violence. We've helped people in Wilkes County, North Carolina since 1980.  We are here to offer survivors of domestic and sexual violence options for safety, empowerment, healing and hope.

Emergency Shelter

The SAFE shelter is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to provide immediate, safe housing to women and children who have left home due to domestic violence. (Men are sheltered in a separate location.)
We've helped hundreds of families get a fresh start since first opening our doors in 1981. Our caring shelter supervisors provide advice and support to help victims build a safe future for themselves and their families. 98% of our recent shelter clients said they would recommend SAFE to a friend.
If you need emergency shelter, please call us any time at (336) 838-SAFE (7233). There is no charge to stay in the shelter for those who qualify.

Help Line:

SAFE's help line, (336) 838-SAFE (7233) is open 24 hours a day to provide support services to victims and survivors of sexual assault and family violence.

Advocacy
SAFE's trained advocates provide support to victims, including:
  • Assistance in seeking protective orders
  • Support during court hearings
  • Referral to community resources

Our advocates do not give legal advice; they provide support and help victims understand their options. For more information, please contact our court advocate at (336) 838-9169.
Find out more about how we can help at our Legal Options webpage

SAFE offers two support groups for survivors:
  • The domestic violence support group is facilitated by Sandra Rankin.
  • The sexual assault support group is facilitated by   Brandi Elmore-Swaim.
Members of the public are welcome to participate in the support groups. Please e-mail the facilitator or call (336) 838-9169 for more information.

SAFE also offers individual counseling for adult and child survivors of domestic or sexual violence. Therapy is provided by licensed professional counselors. For more information, please call (336) 838-9169.

Child Advocacy Center
SAFE operates SAFE Spot, the Child Advocacy Center of Wilkes County. SAFE Spot provides comprehensive, community-based services to children and families affected by sexual abuse or severe physical abuse. The center is currently providing forensic interviews, child medical evaluations, victim advocacy and case coordination services. Trauma focused mental health care is provided by center partners. The center occupies a 1,200 square foot facility adjacent to the SAFE offices.

Description of Services:
The Catherine H. Barber Memorial Homeless Shelter is Wilkes County's only homeless shelter.  We have been open since 1987 and we are open 365 days per year.  Currently our hours of operation are 6:30 pm until 6:30 am.  We serve men, women and families with children.  We provide beds, shower facilities, food and a laundry machine free of charge for anyone needing our services.  We are a temporary homeless shelter.  We request that your stays with our facility be short term.  Our hope is that after a short stay with us, you are able to find permanent housing for yourself and your family.  If you require more than 14 calendar nights, special limited accommodations may be granted.  Long term or chronic homeless individuals should be cared for by other out of town organizations.  We will assist in contacting those organizations for those individuals or families.
