Description of Services: Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission Inc. is a non-profit organization established in 1966 as a Community Action Agency. Their mission is to provide assistance and services to low-income families, enabling them to move out of poverty. Programs include Head Start, Elderly Nutrition Program, Weatherization and Community Services Block Grant.

Description of Services: Blue Ridge First in Families is a community-based program. They serve individuals with developmental disabilities and/or traumatic brain injuries.

Fees/ Payment Type Accepted: Services are free

Eligibility: Services are referral based. Families must complete an application and have an annual income of less than $65,000 a year after taxes and they only offer assistance one time per year.

Description of Services: The North Carolina Innovations Waiver is a resource for funding services and supports for people with intellectual and other related disabilities that are at risk for institutional care in an Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (IF-IID).

Fees/ Payment Type Accepted: There is no fee for this waiver.

Eligibility: To be part of North Carolina's Innovations Waiver, you must:
  • Meet the requirements for Intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ICF-IID) level of care
  • Live in an ICF-IID or be at risk of being placed in an ICF-IID
  • Be able to stay safe, healthy and well in the community while using NC Innovations Waiver services
  • Need and use NC Innovations Waiver services listed in your person-centered plan at least once a month
  • Want to use NC Innovations Waiver services instead of living in an ICF-IID

WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Supplemental Nutrition Program

Description of Services: WIC is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and provides supplemental foods and nutrition education. The purpose of the WIC program is to prevent and improve nutrition-related health problems in its target population. 

Ages Served: Birth to age 5 and pregnant women


Fees/ Payment Type Accepted: This is a free service to those who qualify. 

Eligibility: WIC is designed to serve certain categories of women, infants, and children.​
Women:
  • Pregnant (during pregnancy and up to 6 weeks after the birth of an infant or the end of the pregnancy)
  • Postpartum (up to 6 months after the birth of the infant or the end of pregnancy)
  • Breastfeeding (up to the infant's 1st birthday)
Infants: Up to the infant's 1st birthday
Children: Up to the child's 5th birthday

Applicants must also live in the state that they apply and must have income at or below an income level or standard set by the State agency or be determined automatically income-eligible based on participation in certain programs. Applicants must also be seen by a health professional such as a physician, nurse, or nutritionist who must determine whether the individual is at nutrition risk.
