WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Supplemental Nutrition Program

The purpose of the WIC program is to prevent and improve nutrition-related health problems in its target population. Ages Served: Birth to age 5 and pregnant women Fees/ Payment Type Accepted: This is a free service to those who qualify. Eligibility: WIC is designed to serve certain categories of women, infants, and children. Women:
Children: Up to the child's 5th birthday Applicants must also live in the state that they apply and must have income at or below an income level or standard set by the State agency or be determined automatically income-eligible based on participation in certain programs. Applicants must also be seen by a health professional such as a physician, nurse, or nutritionist who must determine whether the individual is at nutrition risk. Services include public assistance programs such as Work First Family Assistance, childcare assistance, Medicaid, food stamps, protective services to children, adoption services, and The Foster Home Program. Since 2002, Watauga Crisis Assistance Network (WeCAN) has been providing help to low income Watauga County residents who find themselves in these situations. Often, such assistance ultimately prevents an individual from becoming homeless. The program coordinator provides guidance and helps the client create a plan for overcoming recurrent situations through information and referrals. Clients served by the program are also offered follow up counseling to help them achieve stability. Ages Served: All ages Fees/ Payment Type Accepted: There is no fee for these services.
