WATAUGA MENTORING PROGRAM

Length of service:   More than 6 months
At Risk and court-involved youth are referred to the Avery Mentoring Program where they are paired with a volunteer mentor to spend two hours a week together for a full calendar year. Youth are referred by Juvenile Court Counselors, School Counselors, Department of Social Services, and Daymark. Youth who have mentors have been shown to have decreased recidivism rates and decreased instances of substance use and abuse, as well as improved self-esteem, and interpersonal relationships.

The program combines traditional, evidence-based therapies with a unique wilderness experience, Blue Ridge Therapeutic Wilderness provides youth and their families a powerful setting for hope, change, and healing. Blue Ridge offers therapeutic wilderness programs in age-appropriate groups for both pre-teen and teen boys and girls. Day Treatment Service provides an opportunity for children who struggle to learn in the usual classroom setting because of emotional or behavioral problems related to a mental health disorder. Students struggling with negative peer or adult relationships, defiance, poor focus, anger issues, poor social skills, and/or other behavioral issues are supported by a team of mental health professionals. Day Treatment staff work directly with teaching staff in a shared classroom setting to build upon the skills needed.

Services are provided in two cottages on a campus setting with education provided by on campus charter school. Youth Villages completes the Comprehensive Clinical Assessment or GAIN Light Assessment with the youth and family. This process takes around two hours and includes assessment of behavioral health needs, trauma history, strengths and interests. Youth could also complete a drug screen. Youth with a substance use or mental health diagnosis are referred for treatment services for further assessment.

The program provides mediation to juveniles to prevent violence and other negative outcomes by resolving conflicts with peers, school personnel, parents and others. During mediation, the mediator guides communication, clarifies and defines issues, explores possible solutions, and develops agreements that are acceptable to everyone. Mediation helps hold youth accountable for their actions while providing an opportunity for learning conflict resolution and communication skills.

Trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment focused on relieving symptoms of trauma. TF-CBT is intended to help children, adolescents, and their caregivers overcome the impact of traumatic events. It can help with traumas related to physical abuse, sexual abuse, witnessing domestic violence, or an unexpected death of a loved one. Children and adolescents develop coping strategies for traumatic stress reactions and often reduce symptoms of depression, and anxiety.

Provides Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). It is a treatment intervention designed to help children, youth, and their parents overcome the negative effects of traumatic life events such as child sexual or physical abuse; traumatic loss of a loved one; domestic, school, or community violence or exposure to disasters, terrorist attacks, or war trauma. Extensive research has shown that TF-CBT is the gold standard in treatment for childhood trauma and traumatic grief.

These transformational experiences are offered to all high school aged teens in Watauga County regardless of means or background. Western Youth Networks Youth Resource Center (YRC) is a interpersonal skill building program for adjudicated and/or at-risk middle school youth in Watauga County. The program operates from 2:30-5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday throughout the school year. YRC staff provide daily transportation for participants, social skills training, interaction with pro-social peers, tutoring/academic enhancement, and exposure to substance abuse prevention evidence-based curricula.

Western Youth Network provides a 5-week experiential summer day camp for rising 6th-9th graders in Watauga County. Participants take part in hiking, kayaking, caving, rock climbing, and other challenging tasks that help improve their self-esteem and confidence, and assist them with interpersonal skills. Transportation is provided, and at-risk and court-involved youth have opportunities to interact with pro-social peers as well as our staff for 10 hours per day, 4 days per week for 5 weeks.

Youth Town offers hope to boys, girls and their families through an environment embodying the unconditional love of Christ. Intercept - Family intervention specialists meet with families an average of 3 times per week. The Intercept program works in all areas of a child's life: individual, family, community, school and peers. Agency also provides - Life Set - Ages 17-22 for former foster youth and other vulnerable youth; and MST - Intensive therapy in the home with one counselor

Length of service:   4 to 6 months
Therapy is intensive and is conducted in the child's home by a single counselor. The counselor typically works with the child and family over a three-to five-month period. As part of the process, the counselor typically works closely with teachers, neighbors, extended family, even members of the child's peer group and their parents. A counselor on the MST team is available to the family 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Youth Villages LifeSet Program will help young people who are leaving the foster care, juvenile justice, or mental health systems to successfully transition into adulthood.
